　　The August Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival (Chinese characters above) is one of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Chinese legends say that the moon is at its brightest and roundest on this day. Based on the Gregorian calendar, this year's August Moon Festival will be held on September 19.

　　The August Moon Festival is often called the Women's Festival. The moon (Chinese character on right) symbolizes elegance and beauty. While Westerners worship the sun (yang or male) for its power, people in the Far East admire the moon. The moon is the 'yin' or female principle and it is a trusted friend. Chinese parents often name their daughters after the moon, in hope that they will be as lovely as the moon.

On the first early morning of one year, people stick the Fu or hang some couplets on the front door. Some house's windows are stuck on red paper cuttings. The Chinese New Year lasts fifteen days. So during the fifteen days, we always visit our relatives from door to door. At that time,children are the happiest because they can get many red packets form their parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts and so on. The last day of the Chinese New Year is another festival.

　　Several days before the new year, people begin to prepare. Farmers kitt pigs, sheep, cocks and hens. City dwellers buy meat fish and vegetables. Houses are cleaned couplets are posted on the doors. Colourful lanterns are hung at the gate.

　　On the eve of the new year, each family has its members gatherd together and eats a family reunion dinner. After the meal they watch tv until the clock strickes twelve. Then every family sets off long strings of small firecrackers and other fire works to welcome the new year. On the first day of the new year, almost everyone is dressed in his or her best. When people meet on the way, they say to each other "happy new year". Friends and relatives pay new year calls and gives presents to each other. Children indulge themselves in games.

　　陰歷新年對中國人來說是個很重要的節(jié)日。它大約要持續(xù)4天，在這期間，除了值班人員外，人們都放假。工人不上工，學(xué)生不上學(xué)，商店關(guān)門。
